A closer look at intraspecific variation of Cerataphis brasiliensis (Hempel) (Hemiptera: Hormaphididae) Neotropical Entomology
Mews,Carina M.; Cabette,Helena S.R.; Albino,Jeyson L.D..
The aim of our study was to characterize Cerataphis brasiliensis Hempel, an aphid of native palm tree of tropical savannas (cerrado), and to record intraspecific variation. We found two parthenogenetic forms of apterous viviparae females of C. brasiliensis. We differentiate the two forms through measurable and qualitative characters: (i) length of cephalic horns, (ii) number of antennal segments, (iii) presence or absence of wax glands, (iv) location of siphunculi.

Breeding biology and distyly in Palicourea rigida H. B. & K. (Rubiaceae) in the Cerrados of Central Brazil Acta Botanica
Machado,Adriana de Oliveira; Silva,Ana Palmira; Consolaro,Helder; Barros,Mariluza A. Granja e; Oliveira,Paulo Eugênio.
Distyly is a floral polymorphism more common among the Rubiaceae than in any other angiosperm group. Palicourea rigida is a typically distylous species of the Rubiaceae widely distributed in the Brazilian Cerrados. This work aimed to study the floral biology and breeding system of P. rigida in order to verify if there wasasymmetry between floral morphs. The work was carried out at Fazenda Água Limpa, Brasília-DF, from 1993 to 1995; and at Serra Caldas Novas State Park-Goias and in Clube Caça e Pesca Itororó de Uberlândia-Minas Gerais in 2005 and 2006. Density, height and pin/thrum ratio were assessed for flowering individuals in all areas. Plants were investigated for differences in floral morphology, nectar production, reproductive success and site of...

First record of bush dog, Speothos venaticus, for the Cerrado of São Paulo, Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.
Batista,Carolina B; Silva,Gustavo A. V; Oliveira,Alberto R; Rezende,Guilherme Z; Figueiredo,Guilherme de T.
We provide an updated geographical distribution map of Speothos venaticus (Lund, 1842) for Brazil and report the first record of this species for the Cerrado of São Paulo, which was known only from the Atlantic Rain Forest within the state. We built the distribution map based on occurrence sites for the species in Brazil available in the literature and our new record: a deceased male cub, found near a forest fragment in a matrix of sugarcane plantations. We performed ecological niche modeling with GIS analysis to obtain a predictive map of the areas potentially suitable for S. venaticus. This species distribution and ecology are still poorly known, and additional studies are needed to evaluate its current state of conservation.

Functional antagonism between nitrogen-fixing leguminous trees and calcicole-drought-tolerant trees in the Cerrado Acta Botanica
Meira-Neto,João Augusto Alves; Tolentino,Gláucia Soares; Silva,Maria Carolina Nunes Alves da; Neri,Andreza Viana; Gastauer,Markus; Magnago,Luiz Fernando Silva; Yuste,Jorge Curiel; Valladares,Fernando.
ABSTRACT The Cerrado is the largest savanna of South America and its physiognomy varies from savanna to woodlands. There are two main types of woodlands in the Cerrado: dystrophic woodlands, dominated by N-fixing leguminous trees (LEG), and mesotrophic woodlands dominated by non-leguminous drought-tolerant trees (DRY), which are calcicoles and sensitive to Al3+. The working hypothesis is that LEG and DRY are functional antagonists in terms of the acidification/alkalization processes involving different forms of inorganic nitrogen and pH, Ca2+ and Al3+ in soil. Tree species basal area and soil properties were used to investigate the antagonism between LEG and DRY using generalized linear models. The results suggest that LEG and DRY are antagonists. The LEG...

Multiple dormancy and maternal effect on Miconia ferruginata (Melastomataceae) seed germination, Serra de Caldas Novas, Goiás, Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Mendes-Rodrigues,Clesnan; Araújo,Francielle Paulina de; Barbosa-Souza,Cláudia; Barbosa-Souza,Valéria; Ranal,Marli A.; Santana,Denise Garcia de; Oliveira,Paulo Eugênio.
Species with mostly asexual reproduction are interesting subjects for germination studies since variation would be more easily linked to environmental factors. Miconia ferruginata DC. is an apomictic treelet in Brazilian cerrado areas on rocky outcrops. Germination of seeds collected from individuals occurring in the Serra de Caldas Novas State Park, Goiás, was studied in three experiments under controlled conditions. Germination characteristics differed among individuals and were correlated with altitude and soil Al content. Seeds from plants growing at lower altitudes, with lower soil aluminium content, presented malformed seeds with absence of embryo which rendered lower, but better synchronized germination. The nested analysis showed that from the...

The study of biotic interactions in the Brazilian Cerrado as a path to the conservation of biodiversity Anais da ABC (AABC)
DEL-CLARO,KLEBER; TOREZAN-SILINGARDI,HELENA MAURA.
Abstract: As a focus for conservation efforts, biodiversity has received increased attention in the last fifty years. Searching for patterns in biodiversity, researchers have suggested studies including: ecological communities, cladistics classifications, hierarchical compositions of different levels of organization, and groups of taxonomically related species. Here, we propose that the study of the biodiversity of interactions may present a new perspective in the efforts to conserve biodiversity, especially in endangered ecosystems like the tropical savannas. We suggest that Cerrado, like other tropical savannas, is a particularly important ecosystem in which we can direct efforts to explain what determines the major part of variation in the outcomes of...
